One day in Lima before heading to Huaraz, in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. Our 10 hour overnight bus ride that felt like we were being cranked straight up a mountain. And indeed that is probably not too far off, as we went from sea level to 12,000 ft.
This first photo is at el parque de amores. Erica and I are just trying to fit in. A japanese tourist offered to help, but we declined.
We spent 6 days in the Cordillera Blancas and did some amazing day hikes. Here are a few pictures from our hikes. What now qualifies as the most terrifying moment of my life occured shortly after the bouldering pic when we hiked up to touch and take pictures of a glacier. The day before we visited the ruins of a town, Yungay that was devastated in 1970 by a avalanche/landslide that buried 18,000 people in their sleep. We hear a loud rushing noise and I jokingly request that someone tell me a plane is going overhead. We look up and all scream "AVALANCHE!!!!" as we see one rouring down the snowfield on the mountain above us. 4 women proceed to run for our lives over the boulder field that took us 30 minutes to scramble over. Needless to say it didn´t reach us.
The park ranger said this was a common occurance this time of year. Of course.
Erica and I attempted to crank out as much of the 4 day backpacking loop up the Quilcayhauna valley as we could in 1 day. We hammered for 10 hours (she is an impressive endurance junkie) through Cuechen villages, sheep heards commanded by old women, and lots of cows. We were not certain the cows wouldn´t charge and gore us, so we spend too much time running from or scrambling around the vacas. I´m sure locals would have been highly amuzed.
